Peter Whitmer Farm

dwdeford

Several significant events of Church history occurred at the Whitmer Farm where we served today. Nineteen sections of the Doctrine and Covenants were received here; the Three Witnesses had their experience with Moroni here; the translation of the Book of Mormon was finished here; and the Church was officially organized here on 6 April 1830.

The dedication of the site was held on 6 April 1980, the 150th anniversary of the organization. This was done during a session of general conference where President Kimball dedicated the meetinghouse, the little visitors center, and the log home, which represents the home in which the translation and the organization occurred.

At the dedication a time capsule was sealed up which contained the 1980 version of the scriptures, pictures of the general authorities involved, the dedicatory prayer, the scripts of their talks. It also contains pictures of every temple then operating--17. That’s how many President Nelson announced a few days ago at the October general conference.

Atop the time capsule rests a bust of Jesus title, “I Am,” by sculptor Dee Jay Bowden. Together the figure represents that Jesus Christ is the Head of our Church.

The capsule is scheduled to be officially opened at April general conference in 2030, the 200th anniversary of the founding of the Church.
